Here's the result of last nights session, inspired by my good friend and exceptional photographer Kate

Sometimes it's the right thing to improvise and follow your feelings, and on this occasion I did just that.

And so that is how this painting arrived. Late at night/ early in the morning, coffee drunk and a coiled spring unwound as a finished canvas is lifted from the easel, I then decided to stand up and paint this wee guy.

I've been having some wonderful moments in the studio recently, letting go and trying something new. It's interesting to be in that frame of mind, and to work instinctively.

Once I had found this painting, it felt like I had finally laid spinning wheels to the road, It was an incredible energy. Painting it has been a wonderful journey, and I've learned a great deal from creating this piece. Fiona and Brinny are in love with it, and I couldn't have hoped for a better response.

While all this was going on, I had another sale on the site as another customer placed an order for a large print of Last Light. This convinced me I deserved a dram.

This is always a good and a bad time. It's good because the work at the canvas you've been painting is done, and for a moment you can catch your breath, maybe stay in bed and sleep instead of stay up late painting, and wake up feeling rested.

I think that may be why this painting in particular makes me feel quite emotional. The buyer fell in love with it immediately. That kind of reaction from someone about your art, which is tied to so many of your own emotions, fear, accomplishment, enjoyment, struggle, joy, creates such a palpable reaction in yourself

First things first...

August 02, 2016

What a month! It's been full of momentum and paint. I've been working not only on my paintings, revisiting and finishing but also creating new works. I've also started a part time job to make ends meet. So juggling that, child care (Thank you Parents and In-Laws!), keeping the house from drowning in laundry and feeding us all, I feel like I'm meeting myself coming the other way!

Aside from this, my Wife and I decided to head to a local event, Speyfest, to try our luck selling what we could. It was frantic getting the Art Cards printed (massive thanks to The Dandy Arthouse for doing such an amazing job so quickly) and putting finishing touches to my canvasses. We had prints, originals, cards, and even some coasters (Coast Coasters, if you will). My Wife deserves a mention at this point, as she organised the stock take, the presentation and helped add organisation and some personal touches that made a big difference. Not to mention staying with me all day (although it was our 12th anniversary and a rare chance to be together child free!). Reaction from people who came to see us was incredible. It's one thing reading positive comments on Facebook or Instagram, but to be face to face with someone who is seeing your work for the first time is such an incredible feeling. Let's be honest, looking at these paintings on the computer or phone isn't the same.

As well as all that, I've just held my first opening night for my new Exhibition. It's been incredible. There were so many more people than I expected, it was fantastic meeting them, and being able to share that moment with them when they see my work for the first time. It made all those nights in the garage worth it. I must give a special mention to a few people, not least my Wife, Christine for her ceasless support and belief in me, and also for making the food we brought last night. Also want to thank Carrie for accepting me into her gallery and being nice enough to not kill me when I drive her insane. I want to thank lastly all my friends who I invited last night. Their support and enthusiasm has helped tremendously when I've been making these paintings.

So, what next? Holiday? Drink the left over wine and relax? Not likely. I have some materials to order, orders to post, new canvasses to begin, and did I mention I'm now building a Collection of Fashion on Vida.com?  Hmmm...watch this space!
