Here's the result of last nights session, inspired by my good friend and exceptional photographer Kate

Sometimes it's the right thing to improvise and follow your feelings, and on this occasion I did just that.

And so that is how this painting arrived. Late at night/ early in the morning, coffee drunk and a coiled spring unwound as a finished canvas is lifted from the easel, I then decided to stand up and paint this wee guy.

I've been having some wonderful moments in the studio recently, letting go and trying something new. It's interesting to be in that frame of mind, and to work instinctively.

Once I had found this painting, it felt like I had finally laid spinning wheels to the road, It was an incredible energy. Painting it has been a wonderful journey, and I've learned a great deal from creating this piece. Fiona and Brinny are in love with it, and I couldn't have hoped for a better response.

While all this was going on, I had another sale on the site as another customer placed an order for a large print of Last Light. This convinced me I deserved a dram.

This is always a good and a bad time. It's good because the work at the canvas you've been painting is done, and for a moment you can catch your breath, maybe stay in bed and sleep instead of stay up late painting, and wake up feeling rested.

I think that may be why this painting in particular makes me feel quite emotional. The buyer fell in love with it immediately. That kind of reaction from someone about your art, which is tied to so many of your own emotions, fear, accomplishment, enjoyment, struggle, joy, creates such a palpable reaction in yourself

New Year, New Goals

January 04, 2017

Happy New Year to you all! Apologies for not keeping this blog up to date as often as I would like, the last few months got away from me. Working in the Studio and my job and visiting craft fairs and then Christmas (and associated ills and bugs). But I'm here now.

I'm sure you're as keen to kick 2016 out the door as I am, but there were some real highlights. I had no idea I would be here now, a year ago. Let alone 6 months ago. I'm still building my body of work, and with it my reputation, but this year has some amazing opportunities for me. Last year I was lucky enough to meet Andy and Sharon, the lovely owners of Cairngorm Leaf & Bean Coffee. I had taken some of their lovely coffee home after a visit to their previous retail outlet at Logie Steading, and had tweeted about how much I had loved the flavour and freshness. I then met them at one of the events I had attended and we began talking. They are now away from Logie Steading and focusing on developing their guest house. Dava Schoolhouse is based in the Highlands of Scotland, and offers guests a beautiful landscape, and well placed setting for a variety of interests and activities. Within this they are creating a Coffee Lounge, which will offer guests and pop in visitors a chance to relax and enjoy some of their locally roasted coffee. I've been invited to exhibit a range of paintings in this coffee lounge to mark the opening, and to begin a schedule of different Artists exhibiting in this space.

My next news is that I'm also holding my second solo exhibition at Glenfiddich Distillery Gallery. This is going to be a chance to flex my brushes in a more personal style and to create a cohesive body of work. It will run from the last week of April to the first week of May, during the local Whisky Festival. I look forward to sharing these journeys with you, and keeping you better updated than I have done. But for now, thanks for sticking with me, and I'll catch you again soon.
