Painting canvases is great, I love it. Obviously. I don't love hanging them though, and have always been a hit it and hope kind of guy. But I've been searching and found this ingenious solution. Thought I'd share it with you all as well. I hope it helps, I know I'm relieved.
Dawn...
Been working this canvas lately. It took a wrong turn for a while but I'm bringing it back in line. It's a view from Mull looking back toward Oban as the sun lifts into a cloud strewn sky.
I'll bring you more as it happens. Thanks for keeping up with me.
Working, in progress
It's 03:33, I've been up for an hour and had two coffees. Good morning, someone...
Recently, found my way into a large Homewares shop in Aberdeen and came out with about 10 canvases, brushes and paint. The photo shows a work in progress on one of those canvases. It's great to find such quality material and save money buying it. Not quite rich and famous yet.
Good morning
Yep, good morning. I've only just realised there's a blogging app for my phone, which is handy as I'll be able to update more often. I have my PC in the house so it's always been something I'm interacting with instead of being here in the studio.
So I'm working on a large piece just now, having just completed my surprise commission. Surprising because I hadn't expected it. I posted a photo of my mostly completed portrait of my youngest lad, on Twitter, asking 'anyone' if they wanted a portrait. One gentleman did and he commissioned a 2'*3' portrait of his son which he gifted to his wife on her birthday. This has led to him taking more of my work which has been very encouraging.
Anyway, this large piece I'm building on just now is entirely from my imagination. Not a photo like my previous work. But then, I'm creating it as a visual metaphor or statement, so I'm arranging things with a purpose in mind. I must say, the more time I spend on this the more exciting and rewarding it is. It has been years since I had this level of confidence in my abilities.
Unnamed, work in progress. 180cm × 90cm
I'm feeling like this is getting near the end of development, and I have a number of other canvases planned next.
Until next time, don't be shy, leave some comments or questions below, I'm happy to reply.
Having impulsive fun....
And so that is how this painting arrived. Late at night/ early in the morning, coffee drunk and a coiled spring unwound as a finished canvas is lifted from the easel, I then decided to stand up and paint this wee guy.

I've been having some wonderful moments in the studio recently, letting go and trying something new. It's interesting to be in that frame of mind, and to work instinctively.

thought I'd get a wee update down before I head out to paint tonight. I've more or less finished my large sunset,

Last night I was bringing some detail and texture to the foreground of the painting. This gets addictive, and can lead to mistakes as you get overconfident, thankfully with liberal doses of coffee breaks, I try to temper my usual tendency to rush ahead.

To me, it works best when the colours and brush strokes seem to dance, and move. Carrying you around the painting, and sweeping you up with moments of recognition and memories of your own.
